Transmission Flush Explained: What is a Transmission Flush and How Often Should it be Done?

When it comes to routine vehicle maintenance, a transmission flush isn’t something that generally comes to mind.

Transmission fluid is an important fluid for your transmission, however, and having routine transmission fluid flushes can help extend the life of your transmission.

What is Transmission Fluid?
Transmission fluid is the lubricant that keeps the transmission gears working together smoothly.

When the engine is not running, the transmission fluid drains to the transmission fluid pan, where it is filtered out. When the engine starts, the transmission fluid begins to circulate back through the transmission.

Just as engine oil helps to lubricate and cool the inside of an engine, transmission fluid is important for the transmission, helping to cool, and lubricate the inside of the transmission.

How Does a Flush Work?
A transmission flush can be completed with different machines, but the basic procedure involves flushing the fluid out of the entire system. It also involves replacing the transmission filter, and adding new fluid.

When Should it be Done?
For most vehicles, a transmission fluid change is recommended every 30,000 miles, and should especially be done before your vehicle goes out of warranty. A transmission fluid flush should not be done if your transmission fluid is burnt or discolored. The point of a transmission flush is to prevent damage, and if your transmission fluid is burnt or discolored, chances are your transmission is already damaged and a flush will just speed up the process of it going out.

Importance of a Transmission Flush
A transmission flush is important for removing residue and materials that are harmful to your transmission. It is especially effective for newer vehicles, to help keep the transmission free of debris and other harmful residue that can build up over time.

Most vehicles should have the transmission flushed every 30,000 miles. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual to find out if a transmission flush can help to extend the life of your vehicle.
