Signs That Your Transmission Needs Repair – What to Listen and Look For

There are two major components that make your car run, the engine and the transmission.  Though the car itself comes with a manual with all the proper maintenance instructions, very few people really read it.  Without reading the manual, you will not know anything about transmission repair. How would you know if your transmission started having problems?  Here are some signs that your transmission may need repair.

Shifting:  Most people have a standard transmission that they shift manually.  A sign that your transmission may be having issues is if the shifting becomes difficult or when you do shift, there is a grinding noise.

Slippage:  Whether your transmission is manual or automatic, if the transmission is starting to go out there may be a lag time between when you hit the gas and the car actually accelerate.  You might feel a strong jerk as your transmission responds to the accelerator being pressed.

Leaks:  Check your driveway when you back out, do you see any spots?  Your transmission leaking fluid and leaving spots on the concrete could be a sign there is something wrong with the transmission.

Odd noises:  If you drive your car for a while, you get used to certain sounds it makes as you drive down the freeway.  The biggest noise to listen for is a high pitched whining sound.  The whining noise could be that something is going out like the pistons, and this is a big sign that you may need to take your car to a mechanic as soon as possible.  People who often ignore this whining noise will mostly likely be driving along one day and their transmission might drop into the street.

A transmission is a very important part of your car.  You should read the manual, but if you don’t have the time or patience, then listen and look for signs of a problem like noises, leak spots on your driveway, or grinding noises when you shift.  Listening and looking for signs of a bad transmission could save you money, time, and aggravation.
